Increase Website Traffic

Increase Website Traffic a Variety of Ways
by Andy West

You have to increase website traffic once you have set up your online presence for your business. Even if you've had your website professionally designed and you are selling a great product or service, you can't succeed without high traffic and unique visitors. Sitting back and waiting for it to happen won't work.

To increase website traffic you'll have to achieve a few key goals. Getting ranked fairly high in the major search engines, develop links to a number of relevant sites that can lead to your site, and develop recognition of your company's expertise. These three goals sound fairly straightforward, but can become complex when you consider how many other Internet sites are started every day that are attempting to achieve the same results.

Search Engines Are A Great Way to Increase Website Traffic
Ranking well in the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask, etc., is a fiercely competitive undertaking. Simply submitting your site will achieve next to nothing. Your website should have keyword rich Meta tags, page titles and information that will be recognized by the search engines when people are looking for information on your types of products and services.

For the best results, each page of your website should focus on a particular topic of interest to potential customers. Spreading yourself too thin (using many keywords just one or two times each rather than focusing on good content about one keyword or phrase on each page) will drop you in the search engine rankings.

Linking the Right Way
Links to other sites with links back to your own site is a good way to increase website traffic. The key to success with this is selective linking. If your website is for surfing gear, linking to a toy store will do very little for either of you. Linking to boat rentals, restaurants and coastal vacation providers, however, can get you great click-through results.

Your links don't have to be huge banner ads, either. Relevance is more important than size and flash, especially since the words will again impact your search engine rankings. Don't forget about clubs and blogs about surfing and online stores that carry scuba and even fishing gear. Think about peripheral links and be creative.

Toot Your Own Horn
If you have your own business it means you're an expert in something. Let's go back to the surfing example. Write a few articles about surfing; these can be informational (Top Ten West Coast Spots for Early Morning Waves) or narrative (My Latest Tahiti Adventure). Submitting these articles to surfing webs, forums and online clubs will get your name, and your company's name out there. In the author's profile you can include a link to your website.

Your articles should also include linking text that will take readers to different pages on your website. These can generate traffic to very specific products or services if placed correctly.

Search Engine Optimization
Everyone has heard the term SEO at some point, but search engine optimization is a difficult and refined style of writing that requires a lot of up-front research. Each article you write, whether included on your own website to provide customers with added value or posted on other sites for linking purposes, should be optimized with certain keywords designed to increase website traffic.

To determine which keywords will work best for you, take the time to research which words and phrases are most often searched for in relation to your products and services. If you can, choose a few and write different articles for each phrase, with each article focusing on a different aspect.

Calling in the Pros
Of course, developing your own Internet-based business can be very time consuming. If this is the case for you, it may be time to call in the professionals. There are excellent companies that focus specifically on how to help you get the most from all of the techniques outlined here. They can do the research, set up links and even provide professional writers to submit articles for you. They will help you increase website traffic for your site while you stick to what you know best, which is running your company.

Affiliate Marketing Program Magnet

Why Affiliate Marketing Program Is Internet's Incredible And
Powerful Magnet
by Kanaga Siva

The Affiliate Marketing Program is one of the greatest boons
the Internet has bestowed on the business opportunity seeker
aspiring to make money but lacks the financial resources. The
popularity of an Affiliate Marketing Program is because of the
ease with which you can get started unlike a brick and mortar
business. Additionally it also gives you the opportunity of
working from the comfort of your home with your computer.

The Affiliate Marketing Program is today becoming a powerful
magnet in the Internet world attracting Affiliates from all
corners of the world and from all walks of life, irrespective
of language, race or religion. Furthermore affiliate programs
have provided remarkable opportunities to people who otherwise
would never have started a home based business. Who then are
these amazing range of affiliates jumping on to the affiliate
marketing bandwagon?

1. The Part-Time/Full-Time Affiliate Marketer.

Most people who have the desire and urge to make money from
home are jumping on to the affiliate marketing band wagon.
Since there are thousands of programs to pick and choose from,
you can choose your niche affiliate product, start promoting it
and earn your due commission. You could always start on a
part-time basis, establish your home based business and become
a full-time affiliate marketer over a period of time.

2. Stay at Home Mom:

Many stay at home moms are today on the look out for various
avenues of earning extra money for their families without going
outside their homes. They want to stay at home with the kids but
are anxious to start a home based business. The affiliate
marketing program is a heaven sent opportunity for them to do
just that with very little investment and without having to
strain themselves physically.

3. The Young College or University student:

Most if not all College and University students are today quite
competent to handle the computer. A large number of students
work part time to earn an income to help them pursue their
education. The affiliate marketing program is a temptation to
many of them. Though it might not produce any monetary benefits
immediately to help them solve their financial problems fully,
nevertheless they are attracted to it hoping to establish
themselves as Affiliate Marketers in the near future.

4. The Retiree/Senior Citizen:

A large percentage of the people who have retired from active
service are generally quite fit and energetic to start a
business and work from home. Since their retirement income will
be much lower than their working income many of them would like
to earn an additional income without straining themselves
physically. An affiliate marketing program is just the thing
that can easily fit into their lifestyle. A couple of hours a
day at the computer will keep them mentally alert and
financially rewarding.

5. The Handicapped /Disabled Person:

The Affiliate Marketing Program gives a wonderful opportunity
to the disabled people who are otherwise mentally alert and
active to sit on equal terms with other affiliate marketers. No
longer need they feel that they are a disadvantaged lot. They
have every opportunity just like anyone else to earn an income
big or small and feel proud and happy about their work.

6. The Rural Business Opportunity Seeker:

One of the big disadvantages of living in rural areas far away
from city centers is that the chance of starting a home based
business is very remote. Even if started it would end up in
failure because of the sparse population and logistics. No
longer you need to feel disappointed. An affiliate marketing
program is just the business that can inspire and motivate you
to achieve your goal of being an entrepreneur. With a suitable
affiliate program your products can be marketed nationally and
globally.

Conclusion:

The Affiliate Marketing Program is today not only an incredible
magnet but also a beacon of hope to an amazing spectrum of
people who are longing to start a business of their own.

Keywords

Drive Traffic To Your Website Using The Right Keywords
by Shirley A. Kelly

Search engines are the #1 tool people use when shopping for
products, services or information online. Optimize your website
with the proper keywords or keyword phrases for your content and
watch your traffic explode. If you gain an understanding of how
to properly promote your website your efforts will reach it's
full potential.

To rank relevantly within search engine results, each website
must be considered relevant to a particular search algorithm
for a given keyword or phrase. Keyword selection can be a
challenge to both experts and neophytes. While anyone can come
up with various words that may be used when searching for their
product or service, these words may not be the ideal mix for
search engine ranking. Why? If a marketer chooses a popular
keyword phrases, he or she and a million other businesses
compete for top placement. Top SERP placement is dense,
searchers typically giving up after the first three pages. To
succeed, one must use relevant keywords that are not being used
by everyone else and that are searched for quite often. This may
include misspellings and other alternative data. After finding
relevant keywords and phrases, the results must encourage
conversion or success based on each business’ criteria. For
example, while it may be possible for a DVD rental firm to get
top listings under the search criteria “free DVD rentals”, the
person who visits is looking for free merchandise and will
leave if its not found.

For optimal search engine rankings, a page will be optimized
for only one to two popular but non-competitive keywords or
keyword phrases.

Keyword Coding

HTML coding are two words most people never want to hear,
especially in a learning environment. But it’s important to
understand the basic web page header structure and where the
search engines look to find key words for search engine ranking
pages (SERP).

Sites rank highest when each page is optimized separately. For
instance, a business may have one website with unlimited
interlinking pages. The top page must be named “index.HTML.”
While each sub-page may be named according to the designer or
programmer’s preference. Ideally sub-pages are named according
to the strongest keywords or phrases for each business. Both
the domain name and the URL or complete web address string, are
important factors in determining search engine relevancy

Three important META tags are on each individual HTML page
located between the “head” tags: description, keywords and
title. The webpage description is the short sentence that
displays after the listing name is the SERP’s. The keywords are
not viewed by the casual surfer, but offer a clear-cut
description of what is found on the website or who’s behind it.
The title is the most condensed of all metatags. The title
should repeat the top 1-2 keywords and describe what the site
is about.

We can take the keyword theme as far as necessary, yet success
through search engine optimization is not a 100% guaranteed way
to gain top rankings and can often dilute the site and
information quality by becoming a string of repetitive
keywords, not value-added information. Some of these tactics
include adding pages of keyword-rich articles solely to rank
high. Another is developing a mini-empire of interrelated sites
not for expert information, but solely to make the sites appear
more important and relevant to the main site focus.

To ensure a small 30-page website is optimized, it must first
renew keyword use each month to find the most popular terms for
the three major search engines, Yahoo!, Google and MSN. Each
page must be optimized for different but interdependent terms
to strengthen the site as a whole. This involves new keyword
research and website content for each page every month.

An example of a good ecommerce site using paid advertising
instead of keyword optimization is buy http://automotive.com.
Notice the content is relevant to the visitor entering and
seeking the product. In contract, auto http://anything.com, a
competitor site, relies heavily on keyword content, uses text
that has no purpose and confuses the visitor with too many
navigation links and useless words meant for search engines
alone. Though this may gain rankings with work and keyword
saturation, it can also damage a business reputation and
ultimately lead to less sales.

Needless to say there are far more aspects to choosing the
right keywords than I can cover in this article but the
information provided here should give you a good insight into
understanding how important it is to design a website that is
keyword friendly.

Let’s face it, there is no magic bullet when it comes to
successfully promoting your online business. There are pros and
cons to almost everything you do. If you never develop a plan
and put that plan into motion, you’ll never know if that’s the
plan that will ultimately be the “magic bullet” that launches
your online business to new found success.

Do give up! If at first you don’t succeed, TRY, TRY, AGAIN!
There is a lot to learn when starting a online business. Give
yourself a break and don’t set unrealistic goals. Contrary to
popular beliefs, having a successful, profit making, online
business doesn’t happen overnight.

Starting A Business Affiliate Program

The ABCs Of Starting A Business Affiliate Program
by Mario Churchill

The Internet has completely changed the way companies deal with
advertisers. In traditional advertising, corporation pays an
advertising agency for promotional and marketing campaigns it
makes, regardless of whether the campaign flopped or succeeded.
In web marketing, however, companies only pay the owners of
website for successful leads and sales.

If you think that such deals, usually called business affiliate
programs, are not lucrative, you have to think again. According
to figures from Internet World Stats, as of December 1, 2006
there are over 231 million Internet users in North America
alone, about 113.7% rise from a year ago.

Affiliate marketing is a numbers game. Even when only 1% of the
total number of users in North America shops online, that is
already over 23 million potential customers. That is why many
people have attested to becoming rich with the help of business
affiliate programs. If you want to cash in on the huge potential
of this online marketing scheme, you first need to know the
basics of affiliate marketing.

Overview of business affiliate programs

When you open a website, you will surely see advertisements,
either on the header or on the rightmost side of the webpage.
When you click the ads, you will be drawn to the website of a
company selling goods or services that are related to the
website that you have just viewed. Most of the time, website
owners are not being paid advertising fees for displaying links
of other online stores or websites. Web owners only get paid
when a visitor clicked the ad, or secured a lead or sale from
affiliates.

Basically, as an affiliate you advertise or sell the goods and
services of the manufacturer or company that you are allied
with. In return, you get commissions from potential leads or
successful sales.

Steps to take if you are interested in business affiliate
program

Step 1. You need to ascertain if you are serious and committed
in joining a business affiliate program. Such endeavors require
a considerable amount of time and effort; thus, if you are
unsure of yourself, do not go ahead with your plan. You will
not succeed in this business, if you don't put your heart into
it.

Step 2. You need a website to start a business affiliate
program. You don't need to buy a domain name if you are just
starting out. You can already earn a substantial sum of money
even if you only use a free website or even a blog for
affiliate marketing. Although some people become successful in
affiliate marketing even when they do not have a website, it is
still strongly recommended to have one because many affiliate
programs are only available for people or companies that have
websites.

If you are not familiar with making websites, do not worry. You
don't need to be a computer programmer or an HTML expert to make
your own website or blogs. There are now many platforms, even
free ones, that make creating web pages as easy as 123. Domain
names and website maintenance has also become more affordable,
so if you decide to buy a domain name, you are sure that you
won't hurt your purse.

Step 3. Try to figure out what your website or blog would be
about. For best results, you need to target a specific niche
when creating a blog or website. Instead of making a web page
dedicated for booklovers you could probably narrow down the
topic to lovers of science fiction and fantasy novels created
for young adults. If you feel that this is still too broad, you
can make a website about a particular book or about an author.

Once you have determined what your blog or website will be
about, you can now think of the different products or services
that your readers or visitors might need or require, in
relation to the main theme of your webpage.

Step 4. After you have established a website, you are now ready
to join affiliate programs that accommodate the needs and
interests of your target market. If your website is about
science fiction and fantasy books for young adults, you could
probably join affiliate programs that sell books, action
figures and toys based on the characters of the novels you are
discussing, or even other collectibles related to your topic.

Step 5. In order to drive traffic to your website, you need to
provide your visitors with interesting articles, trivia, or
even games (depending on your niche market). Make sure that the
materials that you put in your website are addressed or focused
on the people who are searching for the products or services
that your affiliates are trying to sell or offer.

How to Outsource Your Business

How To Outsource Your Online Business - IncreaseYour Profits By Doing Less

by Tuks Engineer

You're better than me at Adwords. I'm better than you atlist-building. Harry Potter's better than both of us at magic. The point is, no-one can be perfect at everything and if yourbusiness is to grow beyond a mere "mom & pop store" then atsome point you'll need to start delegating responsibility anddelve confidently into the world of EMPLOYING people. Someonecreates your content. Someone else your website. Anothermarkets. And you? Well you're scooping up the profits andrepeating the whole process with another project. And thenanother. For the internet business entrepreneur, by far the best way ofhiring is through OUTSOURCING. Here's a small sample of thetype of work that can be outsourced: - Development of custom-built software & content. - Customer support. - Internet marketing. - Site development. - Graphic design. - Creation of business plans/forecasts/ research reports. - Accounting. I could go on for pages but you get the idea. While outsourcingtends to be associated mostly with huge companies it's every bitas important to the small internet business entrepreneur.Consider these advantages of implementing outsourcing into yourbusiness: - "Saving time". Are you trying to do *everything* yourself? This may seem noble to you, and undoubtedly you ought to gainas much practical experience into how things need to be done inyour business in case of emergencies. But after a time, ifyou're doing a lot of menial tasks then you're cheatingyourself out of time you could be using to do the things that aCEO of a company should be doing to grow the business. Do youreckon Bill Gates sits down every week to do his own searchengine optimisation? No, his team handles it for him. Whatabout you? If you can identify the parts of your business thatare taking up way too much time, you can potentially seek tooutsource them. - "Cost Effective". With outsourcing, you only pay for servicesas and when you need them. In a lot of traditional businessesthat employ their own staff this is not so. Often, there isover-capacity so old Dave is having a nice cuppa and readingSports Illustrated and you're paying him by the hour to do it.Not so with Outsourcing - you pay only for what you need.Further, when you hire staff you have to deal with additionalcostings such as insurance and taxes. This is simply too muchto handle for a small business - again, something that isn't afactor with outsourcing. - "Let The Professionals Handle It". Certain elements of yourbusiness need to be handled by the pro's if you don't have therequired skills or experience to do it yourself. When yououtsource to a reliable professional, you're ensuring that thejob is done right by someone who has the know-how. So how can you get started growing your business byoutsourcing? First, you need to take a long hard look at yourown business and pin-point those areas that are either takingtoo long to complete, aren't being done properly, or aren'tbeing done at all.About The Author: How Can You Hire Dirt Cheap Professionals ToWork On Your Business? How To Make Money Easily!

by Gary Tooth

Have you ever wondered why it is that some folks can independently make money easily whereas as others struggle to earn a buck, and some can't even manage that? Sure, there are those who have natural entrepreneurial skills, but making money is not as difficult as many think. So just what are the secrets between success and failure?

Well, duplicating a proven method is one way to succeed, but even that won't be enough if you lack the drive and determination to make it. What all entrepreneurs have in common is that they never give up no matter what. It really is a simple as that in so many cases. Patience and persistence will prevail in the long term, and that's a fact.

What usually happens when folks try to make money easily is they get distracted with research. They often find what appears to be an interesting and doable project and one which they have a genuine interest in, whether it's an online or offline venture, but then comes what is known as analysis paralysis.

Not wanting to fail, the befuddled one often gets trapped into micro analysis of what is most likely a very simple concept. They then begin to pole-vault over mouse poop and start asking the dreaded 'what if' questions. Many often think themselves out of something before they've even begun, whereas others wear themselves out mentally, so that by the time they do get around to making a start they've lost all interest and the project fails shortly afterwards. Sound familiar?

If you want to make money easily my advice to you is to just get on with it. Learn the basics of whatever it is you want to have a crack at and then go with the flow. You WILL make mistakes, as it is only by failing that we succeed. Remember, that to a greater or lesser degree you will need to invest money in order to make money and be very wary of any sales pitch or get rich quick schemes that tell you otherwise.

I can speak with some authority here as I was a prize procrastinator. Fear of failure held me back for years and I found a million reasons why I couldn't pursue something and hardly a single one why I should. Yet I never stopped dreaming but those dreams remained dreams. That was until the day I saw this acronym - KISS - which stands for Keep It Simple Stupid! That was it, was making complicated issues out of simple matters and I didn't even know it.

Eventually I opted for an online business venture as the capital required to set up a virtual business really is negligible compared to a bricks and mortar company. Being a solopreneur or netentrepreneur as we're often referred to, really has been the best thing I've ever done in my life. It's not always easy as the virtual high street is constantly changing, but the freedom it gives me is indescribably wonderful. I'm neither an employee nor a boss and life is just great.

Making money easily is perhaps a bit of a cliche, but it's certainly easy to make your own money relatively painlessly providing you keep at it and don't give up no matter what. If you still need a little inspiration I'll just quote you from something I read at the same time the KISS acronym hit me in the face:

Of 100 people who start with a plan today, 80 will drop out within 6 months.
Of the 20 left, 16 will drop out within the next 6 months.
Of the 4 left, only 1 will still be at it 6 months later.

An Entrepreneur's Dream!

The Internet Has Created An Entrepreneur' s Dream

by Kevin Riley

I know! You're worried.

You simply have to take a look around to see why. Everywhere you look there's instability. The economy is in trouble. Downsizing, pay cuts, and layoffs are spreading like wildfire. Will you still have a job next year? Tomorrow?

There's no security in a job. Not anymore.

= If You Want Security, You Have To Build Your Own Business =

Throughout history, there has always been only one way to create real wealth - wealth that stays in your bank account. The only way to do this is to build your own business. All the wealthy men and women - then and now - created their wealth by being entrepreneurs. By stepping away from the restrictions of a job and building their own wealth.

Having your own business frees you from the income ceiling imposed by a job. In your own business, there are no limitations on how much money you can make.

= So, Why Don't More People Become Entrepreneurs? =

Starting a business has always been an expensive, risky, and stressful undertaking - braved by the hardy few. A few courageous entrepreneurs have always braved the dangerous waters of business building. And, yes, many were dashed upon the rocks of failure, but the ones that successfully steered their businesses to their destinations, they were rewarded with vast treasures.

= Is There A Safer Way To Build A Business? =

Yes, there is! Thanks to the Internet, we entrepreneurs no longer need to brave the stormy waters of offline business. We no longer need to risk chestfuls of money to start a brick-and-mortar business. On the Internet, we can wade across shallow waters to claim our treasure. Building a business on the Internet can be achieved with hardly any money at all.

And, the rewards are fantastic! A business on the Internet can start making money for you instantly. Unlike the offline business world - where you expect it to take two years to start showing a profit - online you can actually put up a business today and be pulling in profits by next weekend.

= The Internet Provides Exposure To Millions Of Consumers =

By building a business on the Internet, you are tapping into a network of hundreds of millions of buying customers. You're reaching out to every part of the globe, and giving them a chance to pull out their credit card and buy your offer.

It is now possible to place your offer in front of a mind-bogglingly huge market. In the offline world, only the mega-buck advertising of the large multi-national companies can reach such large numbers of consumers.

Now, for next to nothing, you can also reach millions upon millions of people - all over the world.

= The Potential To Make A Bundle Of Money =

Lying within your reach is an awesome potential to create a business that will provide you with an incredible income for the rest of your life.

Suddenly, you no longer need to rely on a job for your income. No longer do you have to take a long, tiring commute to a job that gives you no satisfaction and no security. You can say good-bye to the mind-numbing 9 to 5 job - forever.

= But, The Internet Offers So Much More Than Just Money =

The Internet offers you freedom. When you become an Internet entrepreneur, you are no longer tied to an office, as store, a factory. You are truly free to come and go as you please. You are free to work the hours you want, where you want.

Enjoy your time with your family, spend more time at home, travel all over the world, never miss your favourite team's game again.

Building a business on the Internet is easy and cheap, and it offers you a great income, a secure future, and freedom. You just need to do it!

Money From Clickbank!

Making Money From Clickbank – The One Simple
‘trick’
by Dylan Loh

So how do you actually make money from Clickbank? One of the
most popular methods has to be combining Adwords and Clickbank
but that’s already passé especially with the Google slap
already ‘slapping’…

I’m assuming you’ve already researched a niche and found a
product or products to promote. If you haven’t already done so,
please do that. Once you’ve done that, create a ‘landing page’
that pre-sells the product.

This is a must-do. In this page (and you should keep it short),
bring out the 3 biggest benefit of the product and create an
opt-in form. If you’re selling a dog training product you could
list out points like

:: Train your dog up to 10 new tricks per day using just 5
minutes with this ‘secret’ obedience model

:: Potty training that is guaranteed to work! No more stinky
and stained furniture!

:: Your friends will wonder in amazement and scratch their
heads wondering how you managed to train your dog to such
obedience (not to mention the tricks) in just a matter of days!

Of course, theses are just a few examples of what you could
include in your landing page. I’m sure you can come up with
many other better examples. Remember to include an opt-in box
that re-directs them to the sales page once they opted in.

This is the crux of the ‘secret’. Start pumping out articles
and submit it to as many article directories. I would say write
an article a day and mass submit it so it works out to around 30
articles a month. Include a link to your landing page in the
author resource area.

Keep this up and you’ll have a steady stream of traffic and
sales coming in. Now this is where the fun begins, set your
articles to be displayed to them on your auto-responder.

You can promote other dog training related products at the end
of each article.

There’s no additional work, just load the articles you’ve
already written into the auto responder and your prospects will
be exposed to your quality content and offers over and over
again!

This really is an easy way to build a super targeted list and
get a stead flow of sales from Clickbank!

Website Traffic

by Lisa Moore

Millions of people use the Internet every hour of every day.
So, how come no one is visiting your website?

If you are frustrated by the fact that your website is not
receiving the traffic you think it deserves, you need to learn
some tactics to increase website traffic. Chances are, you
could be in information overload learning about website traffic
tactics, but you just don't understand any of it. Your website
is constantly receiving harassing offers of loans on your
credit card to 'guarantee' Google clicks, your website has
dropped from Google search results entirely, and you don't have
the money to invest in viable website traffic tactics. The good
news is that there are free ways that you can increase website
traffic.

Mega Success with Meta Tags

Meta tags are elements of your website that help search engines
describe your page. You can increase website traffic by making
sure that your Meta tags contain keywords that target your
business and are most often used by Internet users.
Manipulating Meta tags is easy for anyone who's adept with HTML
aspects of web pages.

Hit the Links

Linking to and from other websites is still the most effective
and widely used method of boosting website traffic. You need to
be prudent in choosing the sites you connect to, and make sure
that they are not related too closely to your own business.
Don't overdo it, because too many links can get you banned from
search engines altogether.

Smart, and Rich

Fill your website with articles that provide solid, sensible
information about your business. Use tools like Overture to
find the keywords and phrases that will bring the most traffic
to your site, and then incorporate these words and phrases into
your written articles. Make your content readable and genuinely
informative to ensure visitors will not only come back to your
website, but will also become paying customers. The articles
that you write can also be submitted to various article
directory listings. Affiliate websites may choose your articles
to use, and give credit to you through a web link. This provides
greater visibility for your business.

When employed properly, these methods will result the increased
numbers of website hits you need, and can lead to a higher
conversion rate. Ultimately, that means more money in your
pocket.

Make Money Online (With an Ugly Website?)

Is Your Website Ugly Enough?

by Ray L. Edwards

What gives a website owner fuzzy feelings inside is not the
same thing that makes the site sell. In fact, it has been
proven and shown over and over again that UGLY, but functional
sites outsell fancy looking websites designed to win creative
awards.

Think about the most popular e-commerce sites online: eBay,
Amazon, MySpace and Skype, and you’ll see that they are not big
on design. But they are simple, clear and very intuitive for the
visitor to use.

So skip the Flash introductions (or your visitors will!) and
all those slide show graphics because they are just distracting
at best to what you want to accomplish. When a prospect comes to
your site you don’t want to try and win their attention because
you ALREADY have their attention. Instead you want to GIVE them
attention by making their task easier.

Speaking of tasks, people come to your website with a certain
aim in mind. You have to build a site that would facilitate the
accomplishment of that aim. So if you are promising a free
report then show them CLEARLY how they can get the report in
the least steps.

One characteristic that mark web surfers is that they are
impatient. If you website doesn’t satisfy the advertised need,
then your competition is just one click away. No driving
required, no walking to the next closest store, but just one
mouse click and they are gone!

Here are some ways in which you can design a website that’s
functional:

1. Make your navigation system as intuitive and consistent
throughout the website. Same placement, color scheme etc.

2. Watch the layout of your text to make the information
readable. Not too many dense paragraphs and use a lot of white
space.

3. Make your headline stand out by using a larger font and
attention-getting color.

4. Guide the user step-by-step in accomplishing their task.
Number these steps if possible. Do not assume too much. What’s
obvious to you the owner of the site may not be obvious to a
new visitor. (Much like your home.)

5. Label action buttons appropriate, such as: “Click Here To
Buy”, “Click Here To Subscribe!”

As a copywriter, I’ve found that ‘marked up’ sales letters
–yellow highlighting, underlines, bolding, etc. had a higher
response than clean looking copy. And what people SAY is often
the opposite of what they DO! (Welcome to the human family.)

So in other words, the colleagues who tell you that your
website looks “pretty” don’t buy from such sites. “Does this
site look good?” is a wasted question.

“Would this site sell?”--that is the question.

Don’t be flattered by the friends who tell you, “WOW, your site
looks good!” Aim for the UGLY site that fattens your bank
account.

Michelangelo and Your Website

Why you don't want Michelangelo working on your website
by Mark Silver

Copyright (c) 2006 Mark Silver
Heart Of Business
http://www.heartofb usiness.com/

Everyone wants to live surrounded by beauty. Beauty soothes the
soul, and lifts the spirit. It inspires us and keeps us healthy.
We all want beauty.

Can you have beauty in your website? Sure you can, and it's
important to have your website be pleasing to the folks you want
to help. Unfortunately, this desire to have beauty and to please
folks means that you can spend a great deal of time creating a
'unique and beautiful' web design that people actually avoid.
How can you spend so much time on beauty, sacrifice so much money
with a designer, and still end up with a mess?

Do you do Frescoes?

No one would complain about the beauty of the Sistine Chapel in
Rome.

Michelangelo spent four years, from July, 1508 through October,
1512, painting over 5,000 square feet of the Sistine Chapel's
ceiling.

Unfortunately, Michelangelo was a sculptor, and loved working in
marble. Prior to the Sistine Chapel, he had only painted briefly
as a student of Domenico Ghirlandaio in Florence. Which means
that he got off to a slow start as he learned how to paint
frescoes.

Luckily for him, Michelangelo was already an accomplished artist.
He wasn't exactly doing the Sistine Chapel as a free promotional
effort. Pope Julius II commissioned him for those four years, and
didn't seem to mind that it took Michelangelo a while to get in
a groove.

History reports that one of the Pope's motivations was to outdo
Pope Alexander VI. So, the whole idea was to create an amazingly
glorious ceiling that would stun everyone who saw it.

Are you trying to stun your visitors? Remember the purpose of
your website: to create a relationship with the right people,
connect with their hearts and needs, and to help them take the
next step in relationship to what you offer. If you aren't being
commissioned to paint the ceiling of your website by a fabulously
wealthy Pope, and if you aren't trying to stun your visitors
with beauty, I suggest you relax, just a little bit, any
attachment you might have to beauty and uniqueness around your
website.

Your visitor is waiting for dinner.

Imagine showing up at a friend's house to eat. You've worked
all day, you're hungry and you've been looking forward to
dinner. Yet, once you arrive, they keep you waiting for three
hours while they pull out family home movies, or their wedding
album.

It's not that you wouldn't eventually like to see those things.
But first, can we have dinner, please?

The Two Functions of Your Design

Absolutely prepare and present the food with love and beauty. But
just remember that your visitor is looking for food, not
frescoes. It's been shown that when a visitor comes to a
website, design plays two primary functions:

(1) to show that the website is solid and professional- looking
enough that the business can be trusted, and

(2) to make sure that the visitor can find what she needs really
easily without having to guess or hunt.

As long as you are meeting those two needs, your design is going
to work.

So, where is it safe to bring forth beauty and inspiration on
your site, and where will it keep you stuck to the ceiling for
four years?

Keys to Website Design

* Things to avoid.

Avoid putting a pattern behind your text, or using a text color
that isn't very dark. In fact, I recommend that you stick with
black text on a white background. Millions of novels of great
variety, beauty and talent are written, all printed black text on
a white background.

As a general rule, avoid animation and oversized photos and
illustrations- anything that distracts from the food you want
your visitor to eat.

Avoid unique design layouts. Many websites look the same
structurally- and so do human beings. You don't have to look at
the back of someone's knees to find their eyes. People know how
to connect with each other more easily in part because of
structural similarities.

Your visitor has been trained to expect certain conventions in
web design, so they can find what they are looking for. Don't
play a guessing game with them by creating some outlandishly
creative and confusing design.

* Things to do.

Keep your text front and center. Keep your navigation either
across the top, or down one side, with clear labels. Don't use
more than two columns- one for the navigation or side text, and
one for the main content of the page.

Have a clear banner across the top with a simple message about
your business.

* Things of beauty and inspiration

Make your banner beautiful and inspiring, without being
cluttered. Use colors you love.

Use creative bullets rather than just the usual round variety.

Use color highlights around navigation buttons, and in the frame
around your page.

* Above all, don't agonize over it.

If you don't have a website yet, or your website isn't
effective and you are upgrading it, bring in what creativity you
have, but don't agonize over the beauty aspects. Your visitors
are waiting to be fed! Once you start having a lot of visitors
coming to your website, and your business is humming, you can
take the time and space to bring out the fine china for them.

My very best to you and your business,

Mark Silver

Web Designing For Beginners

by Mike Francis

Are you a beginner in web designing, than keep this in mind:
PLANNING is the most important thing ! If you want to save
yourself hundreds of hours of hard work and want to build the
best looking site than you will have to keep this rule in mind.

Also if you want to build your site faster, there are numerous
free tools around the internet that are just waiting to be
used. Try a few of them and decide for yourself which suits you
the best. First thing’s first, take a blank sheet of paper and
do a sketch of the want to be site. It will be very useful for
you to take a quick pick and keep you on the right track.

Make a flowchart of the entire site you want to build. Think of
it as a pyramid, with the homepage being the top, followed
closely by the most important pages, and after that by the less
important pages and so on. Try not to make the pyramid too deep,
meaning that if you go beyond tier 3 you will make you job of
optimizing the page for search engines very hard. A very good
practice if you want to build your site fast, is build the
homepage first, and make it a template for the other pages of
your site. They will look the same but will be filled with
different content and have different links. This way adding new
pages to your site becomes an easy and pleasant job.

If you want to become a good web designer be alert, as you have
to take care of more than one thing. The most important one is
the need of your visitors. Make the navigation intuitive, and
the colors must not hurt the eye. Also you need to take care of
the search engine needs, meaning you have to optimize the page
so you get a good search engine ranking.

A good web designer can lead the visitors to a path that he
chooses, meaning that he will make the site in such a manner
that a visitor will reach the sales page quickly and with the
open mindedness to buy your products. The sales page must not
be more than a click away for any page of your site. Remember
that a very important thing is to take your visitors their
email address and their name, this is if possible. You can
later use these to sell them more products and in time if you
get a big list this can be very profitable.

Remember, Planning is the most important thing, and also,
always keep in mind the goal of your site.

Is Starting An Online Business For You?

by Lisa D Martin

Starting a business online is really no different from starting
a business that is offline.

To get started you need a storefront, seed money, products to
sell, a way to market your product, and an overall plan. The
only differences I see between an online business and offline
business is that starting an online business can be
accomplished in less time for a fraction of the money. That's a
huge benefit!

For many people having a day job provides benefits that people
do not recognize. The environment at work often means some one
or some company is telling you what to do, when to do it, and
exactly how to do it. If the boss determines you need
additional training, you will be sent to training. Many times
the costs are paid by your company. If you are at your job and
you lose motivation you can go to co-workers to have a quick
chat or trade jokes to pick your spirits up. So you get social
interaction.

Here are some of the downfalls of starting an online business.
As the owner you will be the boss telling you what to do, when
to do it, and how to do it. You will be responsible for
obtaining training, and of course paying for it. You will have
to learn many new skills all at once or have and be willing to
spend the money to hire someone to do the tasks you are not
able to do.

Even if you have all of the technical and marketing skills to
succeed, you will need to keep your self motivated enough to
weather the highs and lows of developing your business. As a
business owner you will need to find other non-traditional
methods for finding motivation and social interaction. One
method for motivating yourself is through online chats, finding
a forum where people have similar interests.

Just having a website that sells a product does not guarantee
success. Be prepared to do a lot of trail and error testing to
learn the combination of marketing tactics and website design
skills that will work for your business. It will take some time
to figure out the combination. Once the winning combination is
found the money will flow in.

SEO - Don't Let Your Website Get Banned
by Chris Angus

Although Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) does fall into two
distinct categories there is no ethical stance on SEO.
Don’t let a search Engine Optimiser sell you that they have
ethical ways of working when optimising your site. Either a
technique works or is doesn’t. Period.
As long as you know the risks, there is nothing wrong with
“Black Hat” SEO. It is not illegal or immoral. The only
downfall is that your site MAY get black listed.

People attempting to do SEO will invariably push the boundaries
in trying to get their website to the top of the search engines.
This article will briefly explain what to do and what not to do.

Search Engine Optimisation has two areas of functionality.
White Hat SEO and Black Hat SEO.

White Hat SEO - is typically working within the search engines
guidelines, by working within the Search Engines guidelines
your site should be safe and won’t face the chance of being
banned or de-indexed by the search Engines.
This involves on-page optimisation and link building. There are
many, many different types of on-page optimisation and link
building that are deemed acceptable and there are many that are
seem as unacceptable. The easiest way to explain what you can
and can’t do is by starting with what you can’t do. That falls
under the “Black-Hat” banner.

Black Hat SEO – is working outside the Search Engines
guidelines, while there are many a grey area, I will list the
definitive actions you should avoid if you don’t want to put
your website at risk.

Hidden or Partially hidden text – This is making your copy the
same colour as your back round.

Cloaking – This is showing search engines on page in visitors
another. This is a risk but effective way of boosting your
ranking.

Keyword Stuffing - This involves stuffing keywords into the
picture descriptions or Meta Tags.

Participating in Link Farms – This is where thousands of
unrelated sites link to one another.

Internet Business Opportunities

How To Spot New Internet Business Opportunities Without Losing Your Focus
by Tamara Esgoode

Anyone who has done business online will tell you, it can be
overwhelming! The rapid pace of change and the constant inflow
of new information and new business opportunities are both
exciting, AND can also be very distracting! If you have too
many "irons in the fire" then you dilute the effectiveness of
your time and your marketing.

Many internet business beginners make this mistake and then
wonder why they are not making money. How do you keep up with
what you're already doing AND keep up with new trends without
spending your entire life on the computer??!! :-)

Another dilemma faced by internet business owners is how do you
make use of beneficial timing of new opportunities?

Have you ever seen the movie "Defending Your Life?" In his
youth the hapless hero, played by Albert Brooks, is introduced
to an unexpected investment opportunity with a new company. The
young man is afraid and skeptical, and he passes up this
investment which turns out to be with Casio, which later
becomes a multi-million dollar company.

OUCH!!! None of us wants to be in that Unenviable position. Is
it really possible to catch the wave of new business ideas
while you are building your existing business? How do you
choose where to focus your precious time and attention? Here
are three tips to help you

1. Choose Great Mentors

One of the most important things you can do early on in your
online business is to find and work with good mentors, people
who can show you step by step how to build an online business,
how to spot new business opportunities, and how to keep your
expenses low and your profit margin, and your integrity high.
Integrity is key here, because businesses that lack integrity
eventually go out of business. Businesses of integrity contain
the basic ingredients that create a long-term income.

Finding good mentors will help shorten your learning curve so
you don't need to "re-invent the wheel". Find mentors that you
can trust, that share your values, and that can help you to
spot new business ideas and opportunities. A good mentor can
even help you to spot some of the emerging business trends on
the net!

This being said, remember that no matter how great your mentors
are. no one mentor can take the place of your own God given
intuition, also known as your inspiration and your "gut
feeling" or instincts. That's why our #2 recommendation is:

2. Listen Within

No matter how awesome your mentors are, it is crucial that you
always listen to your intuition about whatever new business
opportunity you are looking at. Some folks call this "gut
instincts" or "inner wisdom”... whatever you call it, we all
have it. I encourage you to listen to your instincts when
looking into any new business idea. Instinct and intuition are
VERY smart business partners.

- Does it excite you?
- Do I feel good about it?
- Do you feel good about the people involved?

I have found that my intuition has so far ALWAYS been
beneficial to me and to my business ... WHEN I listen to it!!
:-)

By the way, have you noticed that these first two tips that I
just shared are NOT fancy technologies? They both fall into the
category of the tried and the true:

Relationships!

A good relationship with yourself, relationships with mentors,
relationships with your colleagues, customers and business
partners form the very core foundation of your business!

3. Complimentary, Not Competing

On the internet opportunity abounds, in endlessly complex
niches, all combining with the emerging new technologies of
social bookmarking and Web 2.0. It's exciting, and can also be
overwhelming. You need a business that will work, and that will
provide you a solid long-term income, even in the shifting sands
of rapid change that constantly open up new business ideas.

How do you keep it all in perspective? The key is to choose a
niche, focus your content and information on that niche, and
then add multiple income streams gradually, always keeping the
focus on your niche. Choose well researched, complimentary
ventures that enhance your main business niche. Sometimes you
can plug into opportunities with little or no extra work,
simply by adding a new affiliate program or service to your
site.

Do not promote two competing products or companies that offer
basically the same service, and do not try to be all things to
all people. Multiple income streams can be smart business if
done sanely, with discernment and with your primary business
niche as the focus!

The other way to keep your focus is to budget your time,
spending 80% of your business time focusing on income producing
activities that bring new cash flow into your business. Do your
income producing activities early in the day when you have the
most energy. Leave the administrative tasks to later in the
day, after you've accomplished your daily goals.

By choosing great mentors, listening to your intuition, and
focusing your business tightly around a niche, even an
inexperienced internet business beginner can stay in touch with
new business opportunities, and grow a successful business that
will grow and expand with the times!

Website Development

Website Development - Know What You Want, First!
by Gerald Chait

Want to waste thousands of dollars on your website development?
No?! Then make sure you figure out exactly what you want BEFORE
you approach a website development company.

It may seem like obvious advice, but in reality, many people
approach website development companies without first
formulating a clear web strategy, clarifying objectives and
expectations. This hasty sort of approach to website
development invariably costs the customer a lot of money – and
they end up with a website that doesn't meet their needs.

So how do you get the website that meets your requirements
within the budget you have? Plan, plan, PLAN!

Some of the questions you need to answer before embarking on
your website development:

1) Why do you need a website?
2) What kind of website do you need?
3) Who is your target audience?
4) How do you plan to attract visitors to the site?
5) What are some of the graphical design considerations?
6) Will the site target both domestic and international
visitors?
7) What is the visitor trying to achieve?
8) How will your website support or integrate with the rest of
your business?
9) What structural implications should you consider?
10) How will you update the content?
11) Who should you talk to about website development?
12) Who do you talk to about hosting your website?
13) What is your website development budget?

1) WHY DO YOU NEED A WEBSITE?
Websites are generally designed to support one or more of the
following objectives:

• provide information
• facilitate online transactions
• drive visitors to a physical location
• facilitate communication

Websites also support brand image and awareness. In today’s
information- rich environment, customers are becoming far more
savvy and conduct thorough research prior to making decisions.
Having a good, informative and accurate website could mean the
difference between winning the client and not.

Websites are also extremely important for contact details as a
lot of readers refer to website as a quick reference.

What's more, a website provides 24x7 access, so your customers
and potential customers have access to the site outside of
normal business hours (ideal for supporting promotions, general
e-commerce and improving customer service).

2) WHAT KIND OF WEBSITE DO YOU NEED
Websites may be simply informational in nature or more complex
with transactional e-commerce shopping functionality. They may
even be designed to support Web 2.0 functionality such as BLOGs
and message boards, which can develop a community environment.

But always remember, your website needs to serve the needs of
the customers you're trying to attract and retain. Before
committing to the feature set of your website development, make
sure you can link every feature back to a customer need.

3) WHO IS YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE
Who is your typical reader? Think about your readers; are they
young or old, wealthy or poor, male or female, computer techies
or novices? Are your readers just researching or are they in
buy-online mode? Are they local or international, or both? Will
language be a barrier? Will font size be a consideration for
those with poorer eyesight?

Once you have ascertained who your audience is, you need to
design the website to suit that audience.

4) HOW DO YOU PLAN TO ATTRACT VISITORS TO YOUR WEBSITE?
Marketing your site is critical. It can be marketed
electronically using search engines such as Google, Yahoo and
MSN and/or offline using traditional advertising and promotions
strategies. It's important that you think about the marketing
strategy BEFORE website development, as it will impact the
website development process and the technology of the final
product. For example, do you plan to run Google AdWords or
banner ads? If so, will those ads need to relate to specific
landing pages containing enquiry forms, or would a single
landing page suffice? Will search engine-driven traffic be
important to you? If so, you'll need to ensure that your
website is designed and developed in search engine-friendly
way, and that your web copy is optimised for search engines.

5) WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GRAPHICAL DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS?
Many sites feature a large number of animations and GIF images,
which are distracting and poorly designed (in terms of colour
and fonts), and which add an unnecessary overhead to the page
(in terms of file size and speed of loading). A good website
has a balance of imagery and text. Try to be aware of things
like font size and how it might impact your readers. Colours,
fonts and alignments should be consistent from one page to the
next. The look and feel of a site needs to be simple and
consistent.

Similarly, background music, popups and Flash can be gimmicky
and annoying to visitors. Only include them if they are
appropriate to the needs of your audience.

As previously mentioned, your website needs to be more than
just a promotional tool; it should form part of your overall
marketing strategy. What looks great in print may not look good
online. Perhaps more importantly, it may not be user-friendly
(functional) . So make sure you have a web designer involved in
the development.

6) WILL THE SITE TARGET BOTH DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL
VISITORS?
Consider whether you have the infrastructure to support
international readers and clients. For example, if the site is
transactional and you are selling a product, do you have
international banking or credit card facilities and the ability
to deliver overseas?

If you're going to target international readers, it's important
that you make your website global. Consider the format of the
information you display and request (e.g. zip code versus
postcode, address formats and even phone number formats) and
the style, tone, word-choice and spelling of your copy. (See
www.divinewrite. com for more information on website
copywriting. )

Another important consideration which is often overlooked in
website development is scheduled maintenance. Scheduling
maintenance for midnight in your home country may cripple your
website during peak business hours in another.

Make sure you investigate the needs of your international
market(s) and adapt your website to suit those specific needs.

7) WHAT IS THE VISITOR TRYING TO ACHIEVE?
All website visitors want or need something. They may be
researching prior to purchasing a product, looking up company
details, or trying to pay an invoice. If you want to make your
site easy for visitors to use and if you want those visitors to
keep coming back, your website development MUST accommodate the
tasks that those visitors are attempting to perform.

8) HOW WILL YOUR WEBSITE SUPPORT OR INTEGRATE WITH THE REST OF
YOUR BUSINESS?
Websites can often offer services to support and integrate with
your business. For example, you might offer online shopping to
streamline the purchase, dispatch and accounts process
(including payment gateways, stock/inventory detailing, member
or client information, etc.). Alternatively your website can
increase the effectiveness of your marketing and product
support, by spotlighting your products with extensive
information and product catalogues, emailing product
information to opt-in recipients, allowing links back to the
manufactures (if applicable), etc. You might also set up an FAQ
section on your website and encourage your visitors to read this
area before contacting your office. A feedback form might also
reduce administration overhead by allowing your readers to
contact you and request more information, etc.

9) WHAT STRUCTURAL IMPLICATIONS SHOULD YOU CONSIDER?
With websites, less is more. The simpler the structure is, the
more user-friendly it is. It all comes down to navigation;
navigation is a website’s lifeblood. A poor navigation
structure can destroy a user’s experience, and damage your
online image.

Sections should be obviously grouped, both logically and
visually. This makes navigation intuitive. Create a draft site
plan before website development is commenced. Discuss it with
your designers and developers, work with them to evolve it,
then leave it with them to guide them through the website
development process. This will ensure that the visual and
functional elements of your website flow and make sense.

Structure and navigation are particularly important for larger
sites and e-commerce sites. With so much competition around,
your visitors will not be prepared to expend a great deal of
energy to unravel the mysteries of a poorly planned site.
Similarly, visitors are unlikely to become buyers if the
purchase process is confusing.

10) HOW WILL YOU UPDATE THE CONTENT?
It is imperative that you update the content on your site on a
regular basis. Outdated information is useless and impacts on
your credibility and professionalism. Conversely, regularly
updated content tells your readers that you're a proactive
organisation (and it also contributes to your ranking in the
search engines).

To reduce ongoing costs and retain control of your website,
consider the benefits of building it using a Content Management
System (CMS). A good CMS lets you easily manage all content
yourself, instead of paying your web developers to do it. (This
includes adding and editing copy and images, adding and deleting
pages, and adding and deleting functionality. )

11) WHO SHOULD YOU TALK TO ABOUT WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT?
This depends what you want from your website development and
how far your budget can stretch. Is the site intended for the
short or long term? Will content need to be updated? Do you
need e-commerce, email management / e-newsletters, etc.? There
are many people who build websites and numerous approaches to
take.

Important considerations when selecting a website development
company include:

• Do they have proven website development experience?
• Are they familiar with the latest developments?
• Do they have support networks or personnel should they run
into problems?
• Are they qualified?
• Can they provide ongoing website development support?
• Do they have access to graphic designers?

It's best to find an established website development company
with a solid infrastructure and qualified staff, who can speak
with you plain English, listen to all your requirements and
develop a plan that suits your needs. Also remember to select a
website development company that you feel comfortable dealing
with.

12) WHO DO YOU TALK TO ABOUT HOSTING YOUR WEBSITE?
Your website development company should be able to suggest a
hosting company, but if not, there are a multitude of companies
listed on the Internet and in the Yellow Pages.

When considering website hosting companies, obviously you need
to ensure that they are appropriate for your budget. You need
to know that they have adequate security both via the web
(antispam, antivirus, etc.) and in their actual physical
environment (locks, alarms, etc.). You need to know that they
use hardware and software that is modern and appropriate for
the job.

Do they have a proactive backup / business continuity /
disaster recovery strategy, and the necessary software and
hardware to support it? And do they engage in scheduled
maintenance? You need to know that they are operating an
environment that is designed to minimise the likelihood of
fire, flood, theft, hardware failure, overheating, etc. But, if
the server hosting your site does, in fact fail (or is stolen or
destroyed), will your website be unavailable? Some hosting
providers offer uptime guarantees, which is great, but don't
assume this means that nothing will ever go wrong and your
website will never go down.

Also, consider bandwidth (how fast can they display your
website files). Few things are more frustrating to visitors
than slow-to-load pages, and your host can play a big part in
this.

13) WHAT IS YOUR WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT BUDGET?
Many businesses try to cut costs by engaging a student,
unqualified staff employee or friend to build their website.
Think carefully before pursuing this option, because you get
what you pay for. You'd most likely be trading-off visual
aesthetics, reliability, stability, speed, ease of use, search
engine-friendliness , and ongoing technical support. When it
comes to website development, short-term cost-cutting does not
always equate to long-term savings or return on investment.

Having said that, you should always be realistic. Consider what
sort of return on investment you require (and how quickly), and
set your budget accordingly. Then stick to your budget. If you
need to cut costs, start with the 'bells and whistles' that may
not be necessary. Flash, for instance, adds significant cost to
your website development, yet is considered annoying by many
visitors and may reduce your search engine-friendliness .
